In the midst of an ostensibly preemptive war which gained nothing and certainly did not save face, my generation asked, “What if they gave a war, and nobody came?”

I’ve been waiting to hear that brave talk again; I’ve been thinking the idea had died; and I was thinking how terrible the loss of that cognizance is, because in hindsight we can still see that what that thinking hoped for came to be. Is it possible we could have left history to sort itself out? Vietnam’s borders are freer than ours are today. Was it unnecessary to kill millions of people?

It’s impossible to put into words how much gratitude and respect I feel to see our question so alive.

Huckabee talks about saving face, and I am disappointed that Ron Paul condescends at all, because if we stay, we only destroy the very idea of having any honor at all. As this young man so well speaks (and as Ron Paul so well speaks), we can only stay ignorantly, as if we could ever prove we are right by continuing to do what is wrong. But we have already done so at the cost of a million lives.

You know, a “million” is actually a number so great that we regularly recognize that few Americans today well contemplate what a million represents? A million is far too many times to make the same mistake, when the mistake is killing people.

“Face?”

Huckabee can put a good face on killing more, for the sake of some face?

If killing millions of people for purported purposes which will never be accomplished by killing them isn’t enough for Mike Huckabee, a former minister, to honor the ten commandments, then we should all give serious consideration to whatever he means by “face.”

He means a false face; he means the kind you can put on and take off; and he means a face like a flag he can say represents one thing, while the face does another. He means the kind that can kill a million people while the face is smiling; he means Mike Huckabee’s face ? which somehow I envision belonging testifying that even the great “face” saw nothing wrong with attacking “them” who attacked us first. It’s a face he says represents America, so that he can further say our great imaginary face itself compels us that if we don’t fight “them” there, we’ll be fighting “them” over here.

By “them,” his imaginary face means another face that Mike Huckabee and the corrupt neo-cons put over the Iraqi people who not only didn’t attack us; they were known to have been disarmed of the alleged WMDs long ago. He means whatever face Mike Huckabee wants to put over the Iraqi people who suffered under their puppet dictator.

The face we are now to save if Mike Huckabee or any of the other purported Republican front runners are to have their way, is the face we remember shaking Saddam Hussein’s hand, when our face delivered the weapons he gassed the Kurds with.

Nuremberg. The face has almost come full circle.
